If you want to make the switch from cable to streaming, TV services like PlayStation Vue and Hulu with Live TV have a lot to offer.

So which one is better—Hulu with Live TV or PlayStation Vue?

Our winner: Hulu with Live TV

It’s a close call, but we think Hulu with Live TV is a better choice overall. It’s features decent picture quality, and it’s a great price considering how much live and on-demand content it delivers.

Here’s a brief overview of how the two services stack up.

As far as over-the-top services (aka streaming services) go, Hulu with Live TV and PlayStation Vue are two of the best. They’re both pretty reliable, offer a decent number of channels, and have strong device compatibility.

Ultimately, we had to rule in favor of Hulu with Live TV, though. Hulu Live costs the same as PlayStation Vue, but it includes more channels in its introductory package. It also offers better picture quality, and it’s compatible with more devices.

Oh, and the unlimited simultaneous streams add-on? That’s a big perk for Hulu Live users, especially if you have a large family or a lot of roommates.

Winner: Hulu with Live TV

Hulu with Live TV costs $39.99 per month and PlayStation Vue costs $44.99 per month, so we had to choose a winner for this category based on overall value. And you definitely get the best value for the price with Hulu Live.

Hulu with Live TV includes 57 channels, while PlayStation Vue’s starting package includes just 49. So ultimately, you’ll pay less per channel with Hulu Live than with PlayStation Vue.

We also like that Hulu Live includes all its channels in its introductory package. In fact, the only difference between Hulu Live’s two packages is that the upper-tier plan lets you skip commercials during on-demand shows. That makes for a nice change compared to services like Sling TV and its complicated Sling Orange vs. Sling Blue packaging.

Don’t get us wrong—you still get a lot of value with PlayStation Vue. And if you do want more than 57 channels, PlayStation Vue’s upper-tier packages offer some pretty cost-effective options, especially compared to other services (like fuboTV).

Do Hulu Live and PlayStation Vue offer any deals?

We wish.

As of right now, neither service offers any deals on their basic packages, which is a real bummer. But PlayStation Vue prices its add-on channels differently for PlayStation Plus subscribers, so you can get a small discount if you already use PlayStation Plus for multiplayer gaming. That’s something.

Not to worry, though. If either service starts offering a deal on basic service, we’ll be sure to let you know.

Winner: PlayStation Vue

PlayStation Vue takes the win for channels, and honestly, it’s not much of a contest.

Though Hulu with Live TV does offer more channels than PlayStation Vue’s introductory package (Access), PlayStation Vue’s upper-tier packages deliver more channels than Hulu Live. Plus, PlayStation Vue offers more add-on channel options too.

We do like that Hulu with Live TV’s channels are all included with your base package, though. That gets you access to channels like ESPNU and Boomerang for less than you’d pay with PlayStation Vue. And what Hulu lacks in live channels it certainly makes up for with its humongous on-demand library.

But if you’re all about getting as many networks as possible, PS Vue’s channel list is more likely to fit the bill—as long as you can foot it.

Which is better for watching sports channels?

That’d be PlayStation Vue. Hulu’s channels include a good number of sports offerings, but if you’re a diehard fan, PlayStation Vue’s Core package is where it’s at.

PlayStation Vue’s Core package channels list includes most of the networks you need to watch every major sport, and it costs only $5 more per month than PS Vue’s introductory package. You can also get the PlayStation Vue Sports Pack for even more premium sports coverage.

All told, PlayStation Vue’s channel list is much better for hardcore sports fans than Hulu Live’s. But if you want a couple of sports networks for a lower price, you can still get some good mileage out of Hulu Live’s streaming channels.

Winner: Hulu with Live TV

Hulu offers more local channels than any other streaming service, so (surprise, surprise) it wins this category hands down.

Hulu’s local channels include a solid, well-rounded number of ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC stations, so there’s a good chance you’ll be able to get at least a couple of local channels in your area. That’s good news for anyone who can’t get enough of their local weatherman.

PS Vue’s local channels, on the other hand, are less impressive. PlayStation Vue offers fewer local stations overall, but it does offer even more CBS stations than Hulu Live. So if you’re a big Young and the Restless fan, PlayStation Vue could still be a viable choice.

Either way, though, you’re bound to get more broadcast networks than you would with other streaming services (like Sling TV).

Want more local channels?

Can you get local channels on Hulu Live and PlayStation Vue? Yes. The question is whether you get them in your area.

If neither option delivers the local stations you want, you may want to layer your service with a digital antenna (like this one on Amazon). That way, you can get access to your favorite ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC shows, plus all the cable networks you love.

Best DVR: PlayStation Vue vs. Hulu with Live TV

Hulu logoPlayStation Vue logo

Hulu logo PlayStation Vue logo
50 hrs. Unlimited (28 days)

Winner: PlayStation Vue

In our book, PlayStation Vue’s DVR is second only to YouTube TV’s.

With PlayStation Vue, you can record as many shows as you want. Seriously, when it says unlimited, it means it. Sure, we don’t love that the DVR automatically deletes your recordings after a month (28 days to be exact). But if you’re just using your DVR to fast-forward through commercials on favorite content, it’s nice to know your recording of last night’s game is safe—no matter how many episodes of Keeping Up with the Kardashians air overnight.

No such luck with Hulu Live, which includes just 50 hours of storage. And if you go over, the service will automatically delete the oldest recordings on your DVR. Not cool.

Of course, you can always opt to upgrade your Hulu cloud DVR to 200 hours of storage. And while 200 hours is pretty beefy in the streaming world, it can’t quite compare to unlimited storage, especially when it costs an extra $14.99 per month (fuboTV, by comparison, offers 500 hours for just $10 more per month).

Winner: PlayStation Vue

When it comes to premium channels, PlayStation Vue clearly tops Hulu with Live TV.

Though most of its premium cable channels cost less, Hulu Live simply offers fewer than PlayStation Vue. That’s a big problem if EPIX, Hi-YAH!, or FOX Soccer Plus happen to be must-haves for your household.

We also like that some of PlayStation Vue’s premium channels come included with its upper-tier packages. It definitely simplifies things for the user, and it’s cheaper than adding those premium channels separately.

Hulu Live TV packages don’t include any premium networks, so . . . you get the picture.

Winner: Hulu with Live TV

While both Hulu with Live TV and PlayStation Vue offer reliable streams and HD picture, we have to give this category to Hulu Live. Hulu Live just offers higher resolution on livestreams than PlayStation Vue does (1080p to PS Vue’s 720p).

That being said, PlayStation Vue’s video quality is nothing to sneeze at—720p is still considered high definition, after all, even if it’s not as high quality as 1080p. And really, either service would be a far sight better than the glitchy streams and buffering delays you get with Sling TV.

Winner: Hulu with Live TV

Hulu with Live TV is compatible with 16 types of streaming devices, while PlayStation Vue is compatible with only 13, so Hulu Live wins this category. And honestly, that’s not surprising considering PlayStation Vue’s background.

Because it’s owned by Sony, PlayStation Vue has some weird exclusions in its list of compatible devices. Specifically, PlayStation Vue isn’t available on any Xbox or Nintendo consoles, probably because Sony doesn’t want to give anyone an excuse to not buy a PS3 or PS4 console.

Hulu with Live TV is a bit more neutral, meaning it’s available on every gaming console (except the PS3 and PS4—again, because PlayStation doesn’t like to share). In fact, Hulu Live is the only live TV streaming service offered on the Nintendo Switch. So if you’re a Nintendo fan, Hulu Live is definitely the way to go.

Can I use PlayStation Vue without a PlayStation?

Yep. Despite its name, you can stream PlayStation Vue without a PlayStation console.

As you can see from our table above, you can watch PlayStation Vue on Roku devices, Apple TVs, Chromecasts, Amazon Fire TVs, and more. Phew!

Do I need a satellite dish for Hulu with Live TV or PlayStation Vue?

Nope. Unlike cable, streaming services don’t require dishes or set-top boxes. So you can finally say goodbye to that eyesore on the side of your house. Score.

Winner: PlayStation Vue

Even though Hulu Live wins a few categories, we still think PlayStation Vue gives users a better experience overall. Here’s why:

Channel guide—PlayStation Vue

If you’re looking to cut the cord for the first time, you’ll probably prefer PlayStation Vue’s channel guide.

Sure, it’s a little different. It shows channels along the top and time slots on the left, which is backwards from the channel guides you’ve gotten used to with cable.

But it definitely beats what Hulu Live tries to pass off as its “channel guide.”

With Hulu packages, you can access a channel guide only after you’ve tuned into a live TV stream. From there, you can pull up a guide that shows what’s currently on. But there is no option to see what’s slated to air on each network.

Basically, if you’re the type of person who uses your channel guide to check when your favorite shows are going to be on (read: most people), you’re out of luck with Hulu Live.

Of the two services, we definitely like PlayStation Vue’s channel guide best.

Playback features and commercial skipping—Hulu with Live TV

When it comes to playback features and commercial skipping, Hulu with Live TV beats PlayStation Vue hands down.

PS Vue definitely struggs to func when it comes rewinding, fast-forwarding, and pausing live TV. While you can restart a live show from the beginning if you tune in mid-way, you can’t fast-forward through commercials. Or rewind the show. Or pause for longer than about four minutes. Yeah . . . it’s not great.

Hulu Live, on the other hand, lets you easily pause, fast-forward, and rewind through live TV. That automatically makes it better than PlayStation Vue.

On top of that, Hulu Live plans include a commercial-free option. It costs $4 per month extra, but it lets you do all your on-demand streaming without having to sit through five minutes of cellphone commercials. That’s a big win.

Interface—PlayStation Vue

Between the two services, PlayStation Vue definitely has a better interface than Hulu with Live TV. And honestly, it’s not much of a contest.

PS Vue has a more usable channel guide (as we’ve already discussed). It clearly labels its menus so you know what you’re getting (i.e. the tab for your DVR is labeled “My DVR”). And overall, its interface is pretty similar to what you’d get with cable.

Hulu Live’s interface is complicated jumble of menus. Just last week, we had to click through five menus just to find a specific episode of The X-Files. Then it automatically started playing the next episode with no way to navigate to an episode list. To actually get to an episode list, we had to go back to the beginning and search for the show.

Long story short, PlayStation Vue’s interface is user friendly and easy to figure out. Not so much with Hulu Live.

Simultaneous streams—Hulu with Live TV

Simultaneous streams definitely goes to Hulu Live.

Sure, PlayStation Vue includes more simultaneous streams with your package (five, as opposed to Hulu Live’s two). But Hulu Live gets the win because of its unlimited simultaneous streams add-on.

With the Unlimited Screens add-on ($14.99 per month), Hulu Live users can watch live and on-demand content from as many devices as they want—as long as they’re all on your home network. So you won’t have to worry about getting booted off your Handmaid’s Tale binge just because all of your roommates are streaming the latest episode of Survivor on their phones.

Be warned, though—there are some limitations to the Unlimited Screens add-on. If you’re streaming outside your home network, you’re still limited to just three simultaneous streams. And if you’re streaming premium cable channels, you’re also restricted to three simultaneous streams—even at home.

Still, you can’t beat being able to watch on every device you have while you’re at home. Point Hulu Live.

The total user experience

Hulu with Live TV has some good things going for it, but if we had to decide which TV streaming service has the better overall user experience (and we do), it has to be PlayStation Vue.

PlayStation Vue’s content is easier to find, it actually has a channel guide (which, let’s face it, is kind of a basic TV staple), and it doesn’t make us want to pull our hair out when we use it on a streaming device. Can’t argue with that.

And the crown goes to . . . Hulu with Live TV

PlayStation Vue puts up a good fight with its strong DVR, solid channel count, and decently priced premium channels. But ultimately, we have to pick Hulu with Live TV as our winner.

Hulu’s pricing is just too good to be ignored, and you can’t beat the one-two punch of good live TV offerings and an exceptional, huge library of on-demand content. It’s got something for everyone, which makes it a great choice for replacing cable.

What do you think? Did we make the right choice? Let us know in the comments whether you prefer Hulu Live or PlayStation Vue for your home.
