While cord cutters have heaped praise upon the service, the lack of a traditional remote control for the PS4 console grated some. If you’re looking for the best way to control Playstation Vue, look no further.

Best PlayStation Vue Remote: the PDP Universal Media Remote

The Playstation 4 console isn’t solely for gaming. It is a media powerhouse boasting a Blu-Ray player and support for various Internet streaming apps including Sony’s own PS Vue. However Sony dropped the ball by not making a PS4 remote available on launch. It took a few years, but Sony finally licensed an official PS4 remote.

The best PlayStation Vue remote that is officially licensed by Sony is PDP’s Universal Media Remote which connects to your PS4 via Bluetooth. It can be used to control up to 4 devices such as your console, TV, audio receiver and set top box. In addition, the Universal Media Remote boasts a number of dedicated buttons specific to the PS4 console.

There has been some criticism geared toward the fact that this PS4 remote doesn’t work that well with certain apps. However the Universal Media Remote is fairly inexpensive, making it one of the best PS4 remotes on the market.

Use Your Existing TV Remote as a PS4 Remote

Crave simplicity in your life? The best PlayStation Vue remote for you may just be your existing TV remote!

The Sony Playstation 4 supports the HDMI-CEC technology (Consumer Electronics Control). Without getting too technical, HDMI-CEC will allow you to control your PS4 via your TV’s remote. HDMI-CEC transmits input from your remote to your PS4 via the HDMI cable connecting your console to your TV. Pretty cool, right? This feature a default feature on your PS4, so you’ll need to turn it on. You will also need to set up your TV to send your controls through the HDMI cable as well. Let’s start with your PS4.

  1. Go to “Settings” on the main PlayStation menu
  2. Select “System”.
  3. Find the”Enabled HDMI Device Link” box, and check it.

Congratulations, your PS4 will now accept commands transmitted from the TV via the HDMI. Next, you’ll have to enable it on your TV. It’s a similar process but manufacturers like making things difficult, and as a result every brand calls HDMI-CEC something different. For example Sony calls it Bravia Link (or Sync), and on Samsung it’s known as Anynet.

Consult your TV’s manual or do a quick Google search of the make and model of your TV and “HDMI CEC” to figure out what it’s called. Once you have figured out what terminology your TV uses for HDMI-CEC, look for that option in your TVs settings menu. Turn on the feature and it should show you a list of devices that are connected and support the feature. You should see your PlayStation console on that list.

Once it’s all set up, you should be able to use your TV remote to control your PS4 and the Vue service. It may not be perfect, but all it cost you was a few minutes of your time. And you won’t have a bunch of different remotes to deal with! For those who like simplicity, using your standard TV remote might be the best remote for PlayStation Vue, as well!

When all else fails…

Use your DualShock controller. This may not be ideal, but if you have a PS4 console then you have a DualShock controller. The DualShock controller is somewhat lacking in functionality, and is definitely not the best remote for PlayStation Vue – but it does work.

One of the biggest issues with using your DualShock controller is the fact that it doesn’t have buttons dedicated for controlling volume. This means that you will have to have your TV or soundbar remote handy in order to fiddle with the audio. The DualShock controller does handle the basics fairly well however. While the DualShock controller can be utilized as a Playstation Vue remote, it can be a turn off for non-gamers who aren’t familiar with console controllers.
